Who Was Bella Brave?
Bella Thomson, known as Bella Brave to her 7 million TikTok followers and 397k Instagram followers, was born with three rare conditions: dwarfism, severe combined immunodeficiency, and Hirschsprung’s disease, which affects the bowel.
In 2023, Bella had a bowel transplant after waiting years for an organ donation. Her mother once mentioned, Bella has spent over 1,000 nights in hospital throughout her life. Bella’s mother even started her social media accounts to share her daughter’s journey and how bravely she handles everything to encourage others. She became popular on TikTok in 2021, as she and her mother shared updates, keeping their spirits up through frequent hospitalisations, procedures and surgeries.
What are the rare conditions that Bella was suffering from?
Dwarfism is a medical condition characterised by short stature, typically defined as an adult height of 4 feet 10 inches or under. It can be caused by genetic or hormonal disorders, such as achondroplasia or growth hormone deficiency. People with dwarfism may face physical challenges, like mobility issues or respiratory problems, but with proper care, they can lead fulfilling lives.
Immunodeficiency is a condition where the immune system is weakened, making it harder for the body to fight off infections and diseases. This can be caused by genetic disorders, infections like HIVor other conditions. People with immunodeficiency may experience recurring infections, fatigue, and difficulty fighting off illnesses.
Hirschsprung’s disease is a rare condition where the nerves that control the bowel are missing, preventing the bowel from functioning properly. This can lead to intestinal blockages, constipation, and other digestive issues. It typically affects children and requires surgical treatment. Both conditions require ongoing medical care and management to prevent complications.
